Why "born with ovaries"?
Especially since the trans thing picked up steam in social consciousness, I’ve seen lots of people attempt to define what a woman is and they are almost all lacking something.
I feel like if you can’t define woman without adding a bunch of disclaimers, you haven’t really come up with a good definition.
I forget exactly when it happened but it hit me one day, like lightning. What’s the one thing all people who are women have in common, no exceptions?
Think of it. If you define a woman as “human, adult, born with ovaries,” it covers all the other stuff.
Not all women get pregnant — But all women who don’t get pregnant were still born with ovaries.
Not all women have living children — But all women who have had pregnancy loss or whose child or children have died, and all women who have opted out of motherhood or who struggle with infertility were still born with ovaries.
Not all women are feminine — But all women who are not “feminine,” whatever that means, were still born with ovaries.
Not all women were born with Fallopian tubes/ a uterus/ a vagina — This is actually true, not a reference to “trans women,” AND YET, the reason we know these are women without the aforementioned organ or organs is BECAUSE they were born with ovaries.
Not all women have XX chromosomes — Also true. Some women only have one X chromosome or they have three of them. (No woman has a Y chromosome unless she is an XX/XY mosaic or chimera, in which case she was still born with ovaries. Some people who look female on the outside and have since birth will have a Y, but in fact they were born with testes, and thus are male.) But all women with X,0, XX, or XXX chromosomes were born with ovaries.
Not all women are heterosexual — Absolutely true. But all lesbian and bisexual women were born with ovaries.
Not all women ovulate or have periods — Yep. Some women are menopausal, and some women have had ovaries and uterus removed, but all of these women were born with ovaries.
Some women have facial hair and even beards — but all women with facial hair and beards were born with ovaries.
Regardless of race, all women were born with ovaries.
Regardless of socio-economic class, all women were born with ovaries.
Regardless of religion or political affiliation, all women were born with ovaries.
Regardless of what “genders” her culture invents to enforce sexism, a woman is still an adult human being who was born with ovaries.
It’s so simple. I don’t dare hope dictionaries will ever adopt my definition — Merriam-Webster sure as hell won’t — but so far, it’s the best one I’ve seen. If that’s me patting myself on the back, so be it.
